Tell us one unique think about yourself that people know know:
I love love love to write! Most people know that I sometimes like to write music, but one of my biggest passions is writing stories. I've written dozens of short stories, often horror, and am still working on two novels. Its all for fun and I don't take it too seriously, but its so enjoyable to think of something creative and to push yourself to get it down on paper.

Tell us about your family!
I have a super supportive family, if you've ever seen me after a race, you've probably met my beautiful wife Samantha and my son Jonas and daughter Juliana. My wife pushes me to be the best runner I can be often encouraging me to run more often and to learn more about the sport I love so much.

Running:

What is a guilty pleasure that you do after a run?
My favorite guilt- I mean, recovery fuel for after a long run is a good beer. So much that I do a weekly Instagram video showcasing what beer I'm having and sometimes talk about my training. The motto I follow is "anything over 10 miles, deserves a beer."

Hydration Belt or Vest or none?
Hydtration Vest, its bulky and heavy, but it gets hot here in Bakersfield and you won't have an aid station for all your long training runs. Here's a pro-tip though, C.A.L.M. has a water station right before you climb rattlesnake and if you don't mind talking to someone about Herbalife for 10 minutes, the nice people on the Bluffs usually have some funky fruit flavored drinks you can sample to refuel your electrolytes. Just use caution with the Herbalife or your next stop will be the restrooms at Bakersfield College. Hey-o!

What’s the best running advice you’ve ever gotten?
I've met so many inspiring people who have overcome injury, ran three marathons in three days, conquered 50 milers, and just down right have refused to give up regardless of the cards in their hand. However, my favorite bit of advice is from a book titled "Born to Run" and it goes like this, “Think Easy, Light, Smooth, and Fast. You start with easy, because if that’s all you get, that’s not so bad. Then work on light. Make it effortless
When you’ve practiced that so long that you forget you’re practicing, you work on making it smooooooth. You won’t have to worry about the last one – you get those three, and you’ll be fast.” - Words from Caballo Blanco as written by Christopher McDougall

What is your most memorable moment from a race?
There are many, but the moment running the SF Marathon last July, when I could literally feel my mom and brother, who are both in Heaven, right next to me on each shoulder.

What challenges did you overcome when you started?
They were 90% mental. The feelings of self doubt. Once I learned not to care about time, only distance and the feeling of reaching each goal of mileage, was all that mattered.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would like the capability to time travel. I think it would be awesome to go back in time to the first pilgrim era and jump forward to the Woodstock days. A huge difference between the two time era but it's just a curiosity I've always had. I'd also go back a few generations in my own family timeline so I can learn more about my family tree.

Tell us about your family!
I have two adorable little dogs and recently got engaged! The rest of my family lives back home in West Virginia.

What is the food that you most crave?  And do you give in?
POPCORN. And I have it all the time. I’m a little bit of a snob about it and only eat the kind made on the stove. I usually use coconut oil or avocado oil and toss it with some salt and nutritional yeast for a B-12 boost and cheesy taste!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I definitely would want to read people’s minds. Lots of different reasons, but I just thought of how you wouldn’t have to take your headphones out to hear them on a run!

Running:

Why did you start running?
I started running as a New Year’s Resolution in 2016 to run a half marathon. I could barely run a mile at the time, but I met my goal TWICE! Now I’m obsessed and couldn’t live without my new favorite form of stress relief.

Hydration Belt or Vest or none?
I like to change up my gear to match the weather/distance. I always have a belt when I run to hold my keys and my phone because I hate armbands, but I don’t always carry water. If it’s a fairly short run and it’s super hot,  I’ll do a handheld collapsible water bottle. If I’m going a bit longer I’ll use a belt with a water bottle. Long runs in the summer I will most likely have my vest on. Just depends.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting to run?
Don’t get discouraged! Sometimes it’s hard being new and feeling like you’ll never be a “runner” but before you know it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. It’s hard to put yourself out there and start something different, but don’t be afraid to be a novice in front of other people. Whether you race or just run for the enjoyment, it’s all about who you are with. Just get out there.
